It was a warm spring day,
When I got the confidence to ask her on a date,
Her hair was half tied up,
Showing the bleach blond under her natural light brown
I knew I loved her 10 minutes into the date
But we were about to graduate high school
She didn’t want to start a relationship
And I told her that was fine
She had a boyfriend in two weeks.
It was a warm spring day,
When I told her I loved her
Her long blond ponytail
Swishing behind her as she ran
It was sophomore year and we were lab partners,
I knew I liked her as we dissected crawfish with matching scowls
But like that crawfish she cut me open and tore me from the inside out,
When she told me that she could never love a girl like that
Two years later her and her girlfriend were nominated for prom court,
It was a warm spring day,
When little 13 year old me told my best friend I was bi,
I asked her if she believed me or if she thought I was just faking it
For attention
That’s what she thought of everyone else
She told me she believed me
And would laugh when her boyfriend would call me slurs
It was a warm spring day,
When a girl gave me butterflies for the first time,
On the play ground that us 7th graders,
Were much too cool for,
Yet after school,
Waiting for our parents to pick us up,
Nothing could make me smile more than her next to me on the swings
It was a warm spring day,
11 years old
I was wearing a magenta collared shirt and grey skinny jeans,
It was after school,
And my mother told me my grandfather was dead,
We drove the four hours to the funeral where my grandma said,
she would have to cancel his donations to the Trump campaign,
I loved him, I miss him,
But I’m glad he only knew the person that he would still be able to love.
