She was like sunflowers

Always with her face towards the sun

Big, green glasses protecting her brown eyes

We drive in the car

I look over at her, she doesn’t notice me

I wonder if she ever did notice the way I would look at her

After all, she told me it was unsuspected

I told her I loved her in January

She made those darkest days of winter feel like the depths of summer,

Until she didn’t.

I was always told to expect the worst,

I guess I should’ve listened

What was one to assume when you spent everyday together

People had their assumptions about us,

Hell, I thought the same things

But I guess it was too good to be true

I told her I loved her in January

If only she had saved enough of her love for me
