by Annabel Gould

Every night the bicycle.

Hands on the handlebars.

Sweating and staring and silent and whirring.

I’m sorry.

I made a promise to myself.

We don’t look at each other or the debate

Or pay attention when

It lowers to puddles of sound.

I leave once and

then again.

Outside

A downpour of stars.
