by Quinn Butterfield

thoughts while limping home from the marina

What marked the end of my youth’s blissful monotony: a chance encounter;

spurred by rapacious temptations, I gave up my body for a wallet’s offer.

The taste of euphoria outweighed any pang of guilt or regret,

but life, as it always does, came to take its pound of flesh.

Later haunted by ghosts of the past: intense desires and corporeal violations

In twisted men, I began the search for salvation.

Oh, what a repugnant sight it must have been.

Their cruel hands providing an addict’s rush, some fleeting feeling

Yet I, an angel, still found the virulence of love all too appealing.
